Welcome to the new Master's Program in Biomedical Engineering
The new Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program has been established at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2008. As of 2008 only four universities in the State of Illinois offer master’s program in biomedical engineering: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Biomedical Engineering program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, in contrast to other similar programs, is university wide. Four colleges are the major participants: College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Agricultural Sciences, and School of Medicine with the College of Engineering as the leading unit. A committee of six Professors from the four colleges oversees the program with one Professor from the College of Engineering serving as the Coordinator and Chair of the program. Any qualified student in any discipline can join the program. Students can do their research work in any of the above four colleges with the approval of their graduate committee. The program offers two master’s degrees: Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering.
Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering
Core courses include 6 credit hours of 400-level physiology or biochemistry and 6 credit hours of 500-level statistics and probability. Elective courses include 12 credit hours of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and BME-related courses with one of the following areas of concentration: Bioinformatics and Computational Medicine, Modeling and Simulation of Biomedical Processes, Biomedical Imaging, Biomedical Instrumentation, and Biomechanics and Biomaterials. Also required are Seminar (2 credit hours), Research Ethics (1 credit hour), and Thesis (6 credit hours).
Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering
Same as the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering except there is no thesis. A 3-hour Capstone Design (research paper) and 3-hour elective course are taken instead of the 6-hour thesis.
