Development of HVDC technology. Static power conversion. Harmonic elimination. Control of HVDC systems. Interaction between AC and DC systems. Fault development and protection. HVDC systems based on the voltage sourced inverter.

Credit Hours: 3 (2 Lecture, 1 Project)

Prerequisites: ECE 487

Course Coordinator: C.J. Hatziadoniu

Textbooks:

  1. High Voltage Direct Current Transmission”, J. Arrillaga, IET, 1998, ISBN: 0852969414.

References:

  1. IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery.

Goals:

  1. To introduce graduate students to the basic and the state of the art technology of HVDC transmission.

  2. To present the design methods of HVDC links and the associated control systems.

  3. To introduce the current research directions in the area of HVDC transmission.

Projects:

  1. Study of the commutation overlap using Simulink modeling.

  2. AC filter design; use Simulink to verify the outcome.

  3. Control system design for an HVDC link; linearized system representation; constant current and constant voltage converter control;. Simulink representation of the complete system.
