Dr. Glafkos D. Galanos, Professor and Chair
Glafkos D. Galanos received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical
Engineering from the
University of Manchester, England in 1970. He was with the Research Center
of the Department of Defense, Greece, as Director of the electrical engineering
laboratories, until 1973 and as consultant until 1984. In 1973 he joined the
University of Patras, Greece as Chair Professor of Electric Power Systems and
Director of the Power Systems Laboratory. In 1974 he was appointed as Dean of
the College of Engineering and in 1978 as Rector of the University of Patras.
From 1975 to 1981 he served as member of the Administrative Board of the
Technical University of Crete, Greece. In 1984 he joined West Virginia
University as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Chair of the Power Systems
group, and in 1987 he joined Southern Illinois University as Professor and Chair
of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
Dr. Galanos is a Fellow of IEE, a senior member of IEEE, and
a Chartered Engineer. He has served on program and technical committees, and has
chaired technical sessions of major international conferences in the areas of
Electric Power, Circuits and Systems. He has served on the IEEE working groups
in the area of HVDC Transmission and is a regular reviewer for IEEE
Transactions, IEE Proceedings and NSF, in the areas of HVDC Transmission and
Flexible ac Transmission.
He has received research grants and contracts of $5.4
million, and his contributions in the areas of control and protection of HVDC
converters, modeling and simulation of integrated ac/dc systems, power
electronics systems and flexible ac transmission are documented in thirty-three
archive journal papers.
