SIUC Team Wins First Place in the Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

A multidisciplinary SIUC team brought home the first place trophy in the Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition held on March 24 through 26 in Urbana. Second place honors went to Indiana Tech, with the team from the University of Illinois placing third.  More information may be found at: http://www.iti.uiuc.edu/events/mwccdx-index.php.

The SIUC team consisted of the following: Anil Mehta and Greg Pangrazio from Electrical and Computer Engineering; Information Systems Technologies majors, Teri Rybacki, Tim Davis, Daniel Booth, and Travis Young; Electronic Systems Technologies major Josh Backfield, and Jeremy Lawler from Computer Science. Five of the eight members work in SIUC Information Technology (IT) department. They credit much of the team’s success to the blend of their academic preparation and the “real-world” received through their work experiences. Shawn Muir, president of the IEEE student section at SIUC, contributed to the organization of the event. Accompanying the team as advisors was Belle Woodward, professor in Information Systems and Applied Technologies, Curt Wilson IT Network Security Officer and Network Security Analyst, Chet Langin.

With the win, SIUC secured an invitation to participate in the first National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on April 21-23 at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This nationwide competition is being sponsored by NSF, the Department of Homeland Security, Cisco and other industries.
