SIUC Team Wins International Award

A multidisciplinary team from Southern Illinois University Carbondale received the “Outstanding Award in the Field of E-Life” at the “2005 International University Student Creativity-in-Action Contest” held in Taiwan on December 18, 2005. The SIUC team won this prestigious recognition for a project in the area of intelligent transportation systems, involving the integration of smart sensors, processors, wireless communication systems, and the internet. This approach is expected to have applications in the future in many areas, such as, cyber healthcare, smart homes, and homeland security.

A total of eight teams were invited to the final competition. The United States was represented by SIUC, MIT and University of Washington.

Our team consisted of the following students: Shawn Muir (ECE), Oliver Yang (ECE), Jodi Kostecki (CEE), Andy Hanks (CEE), Annie Karayiannis (ID), Jason Hersem (ID), and Justin Gerard (ID). The project was sponsored by Materials Technology Center and the faculty advisors were Max Yen and Dimitrios Kagaris, from the College of Engineering and Steve Belletire and Ted Shin, from the College of Applied Science and Arts.

All the students (except Oliver Yang) traveled to Taiwan for the competition accompanied by Dr. Max Yen and Dr. John Koropchak, Vice Chancellor for Research, who provided travel support to the students in addition to the stipends provided by the host University in Taiwan.
