4 Freshman orientation course, two contact hours per week, pass/fail, one credit hour awarded.

5 The respective rules of selection will be discussed in the analysis of each one of the programs.

6 Includes a two-hour per-week seminar on technical writing and presentation.

The freshman orientation course ECE 101 entitled, “Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering,” meets for two hours per week (attendance is required), for a total of one credit hour.

The number of technical electives needed (for each of the programs and degree options) is shown in theTable.  The approved lists of electives and the rules of selection (for each program) are discussed in detail within the analysis of the curriculum for each major.

The Capstone Design course sequence ECE 495a and ECE 495b (for one and three credit hours, respectively) is normally completed in two consecutive semesters. Within the framework of ECE 495a, the students take a mandatory two-hour per week seminar on technical writing and presentation.  In addition, the students attend a series of lectures by both ECE faculty and invited speakers from industry on topics including: professional meetings; team organization; project management; proposal writing; technical memoranda; cost estimating; task and time scheduling; ethics and professionalism; intellectual property; workplace, personnel, and harassment-related policies.  The first task for the students is to form teams (consisting of three to five students, preferably including mechanical engineering majors, if the project warrants). Each team is to select a project, develop, write and present the proposal (regarding the design and its implementation) to be carried out during the following semester within the framework of ECE 495b.

Within the framework of ECE 495b, the students participate in mandatory weekly project review meetings, progress-report presentations, final-report presentations and poster presentations.  In addition, the students attend a series of lectures from career specialists and invited speakers from industry.  The main task of the students is to complete the project (according to specifications), prepare all relevant documentation, and write and present the final report.
