Tau Beta Pi - Who We Are

I want to see my reflection, boys! What do 16 Nobel Laureates, 43 astronauts, hundreds of CEOs, 12 state governors and several Olympic Athletes and NFL players have in common? Tau Beta Pi!

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. It is the nation's second oldest honor society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to recognize students of exemplary character and distinguished scholarship. There are now collegiate chapters at 221 US colleges and universities, active alumnus chapters in 16 regions across the United States and a total initiated membership of 429,000.

How to become a member of Tau Beta Pi

Membership in Tau Beta Pi is by invitation from your collegiate chapter, Illinois Epsilon here at Southern Illinois University.

Undergraduate students must be in the top 1/8th of the junior class or top 1/5th of the senior class to be scholastically eligible for membership. The second requirement of exemplary character is determined by the chapter members. Each chapter has its own method which usually requires some activity such as participating in a project or community service.

Graduate students must meet the top 1/5th requirement or have a letter of recommendation from their primary advisors plus have completed at least 50% of their coursework including research.

Persons who have achieved eminence in engineering may be elected to membership without regard to collegiate records. If they graduated from a recognized engineering college, they must have been engaged in engineering for at least 10 years; if not, they must have practiced engineering for at least 15 years. Such candidates are usually recommended by members who know them. The required degree of eminent achievement is left to the chapters' discretion; and candidates are further considered on the basis of exemplary character.

If you have already graduated, you would need to have graduated in the top 1/5th.

If you feel you meet our scholastic requirement you are encouraged to contact the president of the SIUC Tau Beta Pi chapter via email at riggio@siu.edu
