Ph.D. PROGRAM

MAP TO SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PH.D. DEGREE IN ENGINEERING SCIENCE PROGRAM

Although the time to completion of the doctoral program changes from individual to individual, based on the past statistics it can be projected that the average completion time is about four years. The following is step-by-step progress toward successful completion of the program. Forms to be filled out along with these steps are also indicated. Please note that the Graduate School requires the forms marked in italic fonts. They can also be found on the Graduate School website - http://www.siu.edu/gradschl/ .

  1. Admission to the program.
  2. Student meets the Associate Dean who will serve as advisor until an academic advisor is chosen.
  3. An academic advisor is chosen during the first or second semester of study.
  4. A Ph.D. Committee, chaired by the advisor, is formed to guide the student in course work and research (Graduate Faculty Committee Approval Form).
  5. Student completes the core and concentration courses.
  6. A candidacy (qualifying) exam committee, composed of at least three faculty members and chaired by the advisor, is formed (Candidacy Committee Form).
  7. Student takes the candidacy (qualifying) exam: first the written exam and within two weeks the oral exam. Advisor reports the exam results to the Associate Dean (Candidacy Exam Results Form). The advisor sends the form to the Associate Dean along with copies of the graded written exam papers. A candidacy request form is then sent to the Graduate School to request candidacy status for the student. The advisor, student, and the Associate Dean sign this form (Admit to Candidacy Form).
  8. Student defends dissertation proposal. The advisor sends the form to the Associate Dean along with a copy of the proposal (Dissertation Proposal Approval Form).
  9. Student defends dissertation (Oral Defense Form). Two copies of the dissertation approval form are to be completed and attached to the dissertation that will be deposited at the Graduate School (Dissertation Approval Form, to be printed on 25 % cotton paper). A copy of this form must be filed at the Dean's Office.
