Mission

To provide high quality teaching to educate students and equip them with lifelong learning skills which allow them to adapt, throughout their professional careers, to changing work environments.  The Department of Technology (DOT) also supports faculty growth and development through research and creative activities, since quality teaching and service to humanity and society is enhanced by continued research and creative activities.  . Finally, DOT supports the ideal of service to Department, College, University, Professional Societies and Community as part of its mission.

Faculty

In the area of Industrial Technology, the DOT has faculty with a broad range of expertise.  Ranging in experience from Quality and Leadership to Machine and Manufacturing Control, the DOT faculty have received both academic training and industrial experience.  This experience translates into a learning environment that combines theory with experiential learning.  The faculty are committed to provide learning opportunities for both the nontraditional and traditional student in an atmosphere that is nonthreatening. 

Program Information

The Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology with specialization in Manufacturing Technology requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, with a minimum of 60 hours from SIUC.

An A.A.S. graduate transferring to DOT with a GPA of 2.25/4.0 or higher may qualify for the Capstone Option. This option provides a curriculum path with no more than 60 hours to complete the B.S. degree.

Specialization in Manufacturing Technology

The Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology with specialization in Manufacturing Technology has as its objective the training of qualified personnel who can develop and direct the production and distribution of products and services. The major is designed to prepare management-oriented technical professionals in the economic-enterprise system. Industrial technology professionals will be involved with:

  • The application of significant knowledge of theories, concepts, and principles found in the humanities and the social and behavioral sciences, including a thorough grounding in communication skills.
  • The understanding and ability to apply principles and concepts of mathematical and physical sciences.
  • The application of concepts derived from, and current skills developed in, a variety of  technical disciplines including, but not limited to, robotics, processes, computer-aided manufacturing, quality control, motion and time study, plant layout, facilities planning, industrial safety, production and inventory control, human relations, and computer-aided drafting.

Currently

  • IL-JATP students have the opportunity to complete apprenticeship training and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree at an accredited community college.
  • SIUC's College of Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. This flexible Capstone degree provides a 2+2 baccalaureate path for virtually any A.A.S. degree.
  • The DOT degree is offered on campus in both weekend and evening format.
  • The DOT degree is offered off-campus in weekend format at 16 military and civilian installations across the country. The department has offered the off-campus program for more than 30 years.
