Formula SAE is a design competition that attracts engineering schools from all over the globe. It is held every year at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, MI.  Among the event's largest contributor are Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. 110 teams participated in the 1998 event from the North America, Puerto Rico, and Europe.

The student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) entered the competition for the first time in 1997. SIU had an outstanding first year in this competition, and is hoping to establish a tradition of excellence. We were barely nudged out of rookie of the year honors at the 1997 race.  There is a great deal of work to be done in order to develop a competitive car for the upcoming competition.

After the 1998 race the Team got an influx of new members.   With those new members Fomula SAE began to host their own meetings and activities.  We still hold some affiation with ASME.

The SIU Formula Racing team had a successful season. The team placed 41st overall during the 1998 race. The car finished the competition without encountering any mechanical difficulties. The car also managed to turn more laps in the endurance race than any other car in the competition. This was due to an error made by the track officials. The car was left on the track for one extra lap.
