Manufacturing Systems Program Requirements

Thesis Option

The program in the thesis option requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of acceptable graduate credit, including 18 semester hours selected from course offerings in Manufacturing Systems and six semester hours of master's thesis credit (MFGS 599). Students will be required to pass an oral comprehensive examination covering all graduate work and the thesis.

Within the 30 semester hour requirement, student must complete the following core courses or their equivalents:

  • MFGS 505-3 Research Methods
  • MFGS 510-3 Recent Advances in Quality Assurance
  • MFGS 520-3 Computer-Aided Manufacturing II
  • MFGS 540-3 Manufacturing Reliability Analysis
  • MFGS 560-3 Automated Factory Technology

A program of study including the above required courses (15 semester hours), the master's thesis (six semester hours), and the remaining nine hours will be selected by the graduate advisor and the student. Each student will select a thesis committee which will include the Committee Chair and two additional faculty members, subject to the approval of the Graduate School. The thesis committee will approve the student's thesis topic and approve the completed thesis.

Non-Thesis

Option A student may opt to take additional hours of acceptable graduate level courses in lieu of completing a thesis.

A minimum of 36 semester hours of acceptable graduate-level coursework is required for the non-thesis option.  The 36 semester hours include 15 semester hours of core courses, 21 semester hours of approved graduate-level electives.
